Colombian authorities have arrested Hugo Aguilar, the top police official who commanded the operation that killed drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, for laundering money for a disbanded right-wing militia.

Colombia’s chief prosecutor announced the arrest of retired Col. Hugo Aguilar was detained on Wednesday.

Aguilar stands accused of accumulating a $5.2 million fortune from his ties to the now-dispersed Central Bolivar paramilitary group, El Semana reported.

Law enforcement officials in the South American country initiated the investigation against Aguilar last year after he was photographed driving a Porsche despite claiming he didn’t have finances to pay reparations to victims of paramilitary violence.

IN 2011, Aguilar was expelled as governor of Santander state and later found guilty for ties to the armed militia.

Aguilar was celebrated in Colombia for his tenacious pursuit, which eventually led to the 1993 death of the Medellin drug cartel boss.
