Drug trafficking case against former MLB All-Star Esteban Loaiza heads to federal court

The case against former All-Star pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who is facing a federal charge of possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute in San Diego is heading to federal court.

Loaiza’s drug case was transferred on Wednesday from state to federal court, ABC7 reported.

. He entered a not guilty plea to the earlier charges and remains in custody.

Investigators indicated that roughly 44 pounds of cocaine were discovered in a minivan parked in the garage of Loaiza’s leased townhouse in February after authorities pulled over his Mercedes SUV and found a hidden compartment.

The Tijuana-born man pitched for 14 seasons for nine teams, including the Pirates, Yankees, Dodgers and White Sox. He left in 2008.

Esteban Loaiza later married famous Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera. She filed for divorce before she was killed in a plane crash in 2012.
