Police: Remains of missing Georgia teen  LaTania Janell Carwell discovered in a shallow grave

Police in Augusta, Georgia says the remains of a missing Georgia teenager LaTania Janell Carwell were discovered in a shallow grave almost one year after authorities her mother and stepfather were arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree said at a news conference Tuesday that deputies responded to a vacant Augusta home after receiving a call Thursday from a resident who reported finding bones in the backyard of the residence.

According to Augusta Chronicle, investigators sent dental records to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which confirmed the remains were those of LaTania Janell Carwell.

The teen was reported missing in April 2017 the day before her 16th birthday.

The victim’s parents were arrested on May 23rd in connection with Carwell’s disappearance. Authorities arrested the teen’s stepfather, Leon Tripp in DeKalb County and her mother, Tonya Tripp, in Atlanta.

Roundtree said a statement made by her stepfather in June, prompted investigators to suspect the victim was dead.

Corwell was last seen with Tripp and statement eventually led authorities to charge him with kidnapping and murder.

Prosecutors filed indictments Tuesday charging both parents with additional counts in connection with the discovery.

Both remain in the custody of the Richmond County jail..
