Authorities in Mexico took 18 people into custody Thursday who are tied to the kidnapping of two Mexican federal agents who were forced to appear on a video by a drug cartel before they were murdered.

Among those apprehended included members of the local police force in Puerto Vallarta who reportedly provided protection and intelligence for the unknown drug cartel as well as Colombian citizens Mexico News Daily reported.

Acting Attorney General Alberto Elias Beltran said at a press conference last Thursday that the arrests were executed earlier that day during a series of raids in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. The Jalisco New Generation cartel primarily controls Nayarit.

The agents’ bodies were discovered in Xalisco, a town in the Pacific state of Nayarit, two weeks after they went missing. They had worked for the Criminal Investigation Agency, a form of a federal detectives’ bureau.

In the footage, the Mexican federal agents were accused of being undercover officers, but the government said they were off-duty when they were kidnapped.

Elias Beltran said those who ordered, carried out, cooperated and protected those involved in the murders “will have the punishment they deserve.”

Among those arrested was a suspect who reportedly oversaw the release of the video.
