A group of heroic Mexican police officers used their bodies as shields to protect two toddlers during a violent gun battle in the border state of Tamaulipas.

One child was injured during the conflict. The officers shielded the toddlers as they fought off various cartel gunmen until they could get the children to emergency medical personnel.

The incident started when state officers responded to various areas in Reynosa after receiving reports of shootouts between cartel groups.

Police responded to Boulevard Hidalgo, one of the primary roads in Reynosa.

Body camera footage obtained by Breitbart Texas showed the moments Tamaulipas state police officers struggled with cartel gunmen.

During the fight, fleeing cartel gunmen in an SUV crashed into a mid-sized vehicle, killing a young woman and wounding one of her two children inside.

Police raced toward the car to save the two toddlers and get them out of the line of fire.

The gun battles are part of the ongoing war for control of Reynosa.

Two rival groups of the Gulf Cartel continue to battle for control of the area’s drug and human smuggling territories.

The fighting has resulted in fierce gun battles where convoys wander the streets searching for rivals. The struggle has also led to an increasing number of murders.

Since the violence commenced in May 2017, 416 individuals were killed in Reynosa, including innocent bystanders, military personnel, police, and cartel members, Breitbart Texas reported.
