Authorities in Mexico have seized 201 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a bunker in the border state of Tamaulipas.

Mexican Army officials said soldiers located the 1.50 meters deep by 1.50 meters wide and one-meter long bunker while conducting a land reconnaissance operation on the banks of the Rio Grande, earlier this week in the municipality of Miguel Aleman.

A more extensive search of the bunker by military personnel uncovered 10 sacks of different sizes inside the cavity containing bricks of cocaine, each weighing one kilogram, according to Proceso.

Officials said the illegal drugs were seized and an investigation is currently active.

The town of Miguel Aleman, located across the border from Roma, Texas, has traditionally been a known smuggling corridor for the Gulf Cartel.

However, the area surrounding Miguel Aleman has experienced an uptick in cartel-related violence in recent years following an incursion by the Gulf Cartel’s one-time ally now archrival Los Zetas.

The region’s lack of physical barriers makes it an ideal area for the smuggling of illicit drugs and human contraband into the United States.
