U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted immigration raids in North Carolina resulting in the arrests of 40 people officials revealed.

Bryan Cox with the ICE’s Atlanta office told the Asheville-Citizen Times around 15 people were arrested in western North Carolina last week and approximately 25 people were also detained in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.

Cox said most of the individuals arrested have been charged with illegal entry to the United States. However, he maintinaed that most of the people were targeted because of prior criminal activity.

The official refused to say whether federal immigration agents arrested people in other parts of the state, explaining he can only confirm arrest reports.

Mike Meno with the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina scrutinized the raids, maintaining the enforcement effort breaks up families across the state.
