Mexican soccer star Mario Agustin Bueno Castillo was arrested in South Texas in connection with a failed drug cash smuggling attempt.

Law enforcement officials said Castillo was arrested after Texas narcotics task force officers stopped his vehicle for speeding on U.S. Highway 77 in Kleberg County.

The former player for top Liga Premier de México clubs including Chivas, Atlante, Atlas, and Tigres, Atlante, and Atlas, reportedly told officers he was working as a professional soccer scout.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered $267,404 in currency hidden inside two false compartments under the vehicle’s driver and passenger seats, according to KRIS-TV.

During his initial court hearing officials with the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) working with task force officers managed to implicate Mario Agustín Bueno-Castillo to an ongoing cash smuggling operation and requested authorization to pursue federal charges.

As a result, the former soccer star will remain in the custody of the Brooks County Detention Center in Falfurrias with no bond, awaiting federal charges of “bulk cash smuggling into or out of the United States.”
