Mexican authorities seized a massive cache of weapons and drugs during several raids last Friday in the border state of Tamaulipas.

Military officials based in Tamaulipas, reported on a “relevant” confiscation of weapons in four different homes, consisting of 206 assault rifles, 14 small arms, 2 Barret 50 Caliber rifles, a Russian RPG rocket launcher with 33 refills, ten 40-caliber grenades, drugs and dozens of military-issued vests, among other items.

“The seizure was a result an investigation initiated after receiving an anonymous tip related to arms trafficking,” an official with Mexico’s National Defense Secretariat said a statement.

“The tip made it possible to secure weapons, ammunition and tactical equipment used by criminals,” the statement added.

In addition, 141,697 kilos of methamphetamine, four buildings, and four vehicles were also seized in the raids, Proceso reported.

The anonymous tip also allowed the Army to free a family of five who were kidnapped and resulted in the capture of three alleged suspects..

“The magnitude of arms and ammunition trafficking is a major factor that generates violence through illicit acts that hurt the population,” the official said.

The confiscated arms were presented to the press by the Eighth Military Zone in the facilities of the 16th Motorized Cavalry Regiment.  However, many reporters did not attend because of purported threats by drug cartels.
