Border Patrol agents find Tiger cub inside a duffel bag

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)  agents in South Texas busted three people trying to smuggle a young tiger cub in a duffel bag over the US-Mexico border.

According to the KHOU, agents responding to reports of an illegal border crossing discovered the sedated tiger cub inside a duffel bag.

Officials said three individuals were carrying the exotic animal across the Rio Grande, but dropped the bag and fled back into Mexico before agents could apprehend the suspected smugglers.

CBP agent Marshall Maynard, who made the discovery told the Brownsville Herald that he assumed he would find drugs when he opened the bag but was shocked to find the tiger cub.

“I responded to some traffic, and that’s when I saw a duffel bag just sitting on the ground. So that’s when I approached the bag, opened it up and I immediately knew that I had found something special,” Maynard told the Herald.

Maynard quickly signaled other Border Patrol agents of the unusual discovery.

He added that the cub was heavily sedated and not moving.

The tiger cub was transported Gladys Porter Zoo, where it remains under the care of zoo veterinarians while officials find a permanent sanctuary for the animal.
