Jury awards $10 million to Khanefah Boozer, the Philadelphia man wrongfully jailed for three years.

A jury has awarded a $10 million judgment to Khanefah Boozer, the 33-year-old Philadelphia man who languished inside a jail cell for three years for a wrongful arrest that was predicated on the false testimony of a police officer.

According to CBS Philly, the verdict was rendered Thursday in the case of Boozer, who had remained in custody on $500,000 bail while awaiting trial for allegedly firing a gun at officer Ryan Waltman in 2011.

During his eventual trial in 2014, another man testified under oath that it was he, not Boozer, who fired shots in the air, not at the officer.

Boozer filed a class-action lawsuit, in which he asserted that he provided every detail regarding the night of his arrest to police, but it was never investigated.

During his incarceration, Boozer’s mother and sister both passed away.

Attorneys representing the city of Philadelphia maintained that Waltman, who remains on the force, made an honest mistake and said the city may appeal the verdict.
