The seizure of over 1,200 kilos of cocaine off the coast of the Mexican state of Michoacan illustrates the trafficking routes being utilized by cartels to smuggle drugs from Central America into Mexico using speedboats.

The seizure is the third of its kind since the start of the year.

Mexican Navy members recently interdicted a speedboat off the coast of Michoacan, roughly 90 nautical miles from the Port of Lazaro Cardenas.

Inside, officials discovered 32 bundles, weighing roughly 1,269 kilos.

The seizure took place as the result of a series of probes that concluded with the raid, where the Mexican Navy used various ships and a helicopter to stop the speedboat, Breitbart Texas reported.

Six of the individuals taken into custody were Mexican natives while two others were from Ecuador.

The seizure took place only weeks after Mexico’s Navy arrested five men smuggling over a ton of cocaine off the coast of Acapulco, Guerrero, and a similar bust near the same area where law enforcement arrested 14 smugglers transporting a ton of cocaine and a human body.

U.S. and Mexican authorities say`the smuggling routes begin in the port city of Manta, Ecuador. From there, smugglers establish various fueling depots along the way to move the drugs into Mexico’s major ports.
