An armed drug cartel operative assassinated the former mayor of the Mexican border city of Piedras Negras as he was leaving a political debate.

The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. outside of the Coahuila State University Auditorium when a bearded hitman sporting gray clothing walked up to former mayor Fernando Puron Johnston and shot him in the back of the head.

The drug cartel gunman shot him two times in the chest area before fleeing on foot, according to the Eagle Pass Business Journal.

Surveillance footage shows the moment when the gunman approaches Puron from behind and opens fire.

State and federal officials launched a massive manhunt to track down the gunman and other accomplices who may have assisted him. As of currently, no arrests had been made.

Emergency personnel rushed Puron to a local hospital where he later died.

Puron, a candidate for Mexico’s Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) who was running for a federal congressional seat, had just completed a heated debate with candidates from other parties.

Before he became a congressional candidate, Puron was the mayor of Piedras Negras credited with boosting economic growth while taking a hard line on seedy bars and shutting down brothels along with cantinas, which in the past had been used as fronts by drug cartels.
