North Carolina bartender arrested for the theft after stealing $10,000 in tips

A bartender in North Carolina was charged with theft after stealing $10,000 in tips from the restaurant where she was formerly working.

Authorities say Erika Denton reportedly falsely altered multiple receipts for personal gain at Tasu Asian Bistro in Cary between January 1st and early this month.

The 26-year-old woman would allegedly alter the food bill with the tip amount, which resulted in larger tips that she would steal.

“It is really disappointing. It’s hard to find honest people that you can trust that they can be loyal to you,” restaurant manager Katrina Oliver said in an interview with WTVD.

According to the station, one of Denton’s adjusted receipts more than tripled tips for herself.

Denton posted a $2,500 bond after she was charged with theft by obtaining property by false pretense.

“We want to make sure that when we hire people, they will stay with us and can provide excellent customer service to our guests,” Oliver added.

Going forward, Oliver indicated that Tasu is tightening up both operating practices and hiring plans. The restaurant now examines all receipts every evening and plans to carry out background checks on all of its employees.
