Mexico elects Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as the new president

Mexico’s newly elected leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador vowed Monday to “reach an understanding” with U.S. President Donald Trump in the wake of an unsettled relationship for two nations seeking to reach an accord on a multitude of serious issues including cooperation on security, immigration, and trade.

Lopez Obrador stressed the need for cooperation and mutual respect during an interview with Televisa immediately after his landslide victory but didn’t specify what kind of “understanding” would be reached with the Trump administration.

“We are conscious of the need to maintain good relations with the United States,” Obrador said. “We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometers, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States. It is our main economic-commercial partner.”

“We are not going to fight. We are always going to seek for there to be an agreement. … We are going to extend our frank hand to seek a relation of friendship, I repeat, of cooperation with the United States.”

Meanwhile, President Trump said Monday he had a 30-minute telephone conversation with his new Mexican counterpart immediately after his historic landslide victory.

“I think the relationship will be a very good one.” Trump stated, adding that the two leaders discussed several topics ranging from the North American Free Trade Agreement to border security.
