A U.S. citizen who was killed while traveling in Mexico on vacation during the Christmas holiday was a city administrator from California.

Gunmen killed California resident Doug Bradley in the Mexican state of Guerrero, a hotspot for cartel violence.

Officials in Mexico said Bradley, an administrative director for the city of Imperial Beach, was murdered in the resort of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

His slaying occurred the day before his 50th birthday, according to a statement released by Imperial Beach city officials.

A press release issued by the Guerrero Attorney General’s Office indicated that Douglas “N” (Mexican officials do not release last names) is a U.S. tourist who was killed after he was shot three times.

Mexican police indicated Bradley had frequently traveled to the area. Information regarding the incident remains scarce.

However, Imperial Beach officials quoted Mexican reports that said that Bradley was shot during a robbery gone awry, CBS8 reported.

Preliminary details point to Bradley having been shot on December 28th.

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is less than 150 miles away from the popular beach town of Acapulco. Guerrero and the famous city of Acapulco have become the epicenter of a bloody dispute where rival drug cartels seek to gain control of lucrative shipping ports, drug production/cultivation territories and the distribution of drugs in tourist hotspots.

The violence in Guerrero increased to the point that morgue officials went on strike early in 2017 because of the mounting number of unclaimed corpses that had overloaded the building’s capacity.
