California Police charg Matthew Nicholson with fatal shooting of his mother

Authorities in Northern California arrested a man after fatally shot his mother after an argument that erupted a broken video game headset.

Ceres Police detained 28-year-old Matthew Nicholson of Ceres on Thursday night on suspicion of murder.

According to KCRA, officers were called to a disturbance to Nicholson’s home around 9:50 p.m. and discovered his 68-year-old mother, Lydia Nicholson with a head wound.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

Investigators said the woman went to check on her son in his bedroom after she heard angry shouting while he played a video game.

Officials said an argument ensued between the two and at some point Matthew Nicholson broke his video game headset, then blamed his mother.

The suspect retrieved a gun and allegedly shot his mother before the suspect’s 81-year-old father, Loren Nicholson, managed to disarm his son, according to police reports.

“I understand that he would’ve killed the father too, but the gun jammed. The father grabbed the gun, emptied it,” a family friend told Fox40,

Nicholson fled the home in his vehicle and was stopped a short time later in the town of Riverbank.

Cops booked the suspect into the Stanislaus County Jail where he remains without bail.

It is unclear whether he has an attorney.
