Authorities in the United Kingdom removed a British Airways pilot from the cockpit of a flight over fears he was under the influence of alcohol.

According to The Sun newspaper, police in Sussex “rushed on the plane and headed straight for the cockpit on Saturday over fears the pilot of a flight destined for Mauritius was drunk.”

The newspaper says worried airline employees alerted police before the flight departed.

The British Airways pilot was cuffed and led away.

Police officials said a 49-year-old man from west London has been arrested “on suspicion of performing an aviation function when the level of alcohol was over the legal limit.”

The flight departed several hours late from Gatwick on Thursday after another crew member joined the flight.

British Airways apologized for the delay and said in a statement Saturday that it was “taking this matter extremely seriously and are assisting the police with their inquiries.”
