Two Ohio Police Officers gunned down while responding to 911 hang up call

Authorities say two Ohio police officers were shot and killed by an armed suspect while responding to a call of a disturbance in the town of Westerville, located north of Columbus on Saturday.

Law enforcement officials said a caller dialed 911 but hung up before the dispatcher could gather further information.

Westerville Police Department Joe Morbitzer said during an emotional press conference Saturday afternoon that the armed assailant opened fire shortly after both cops arrived on the scene, killing officers Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering.

The unidentified male suspect was also shot and wounded but his condition remains unknown, according to the 10TV.com.

Morbitzer said the Westerville PD received “a 911 hang-up call” at around 12:02 p.m., and dispatched units to a potential domestic situation.

Officer Joering died at the scene while Morelli succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

According to Morbitzer, Columbus Police was assisting Westerville Police detectives with the investigation.

President Trump paid tribute to the fallen Ohio police officers on Twitter. “My thoughts and prayers are with the two police officers, their families and everybody at the Westerville PD.’’
