An inmate in Peru left corrections officers seeing double — after he reportedly drugged his twin and abandoned him in his cell.

Alexander Delgado was serving 16 years behind bars for the sexual abuse of a child and robbery when he purportedly devised a scheme in January 2016 to trade places with his twin brother, Giancarlo.

During a visit from his twin, the prisoner drugged his brother, changed into his prison garb and walked out of prison located north of Lima, according to the BBC.

The switch was only confirmed when prison officials took his brother’s fingerprints.

Delgado remained on the run for 13 months until he was apprehended on Monday in Callao.

He told authorities that he plotted the jailbreak “because [he] was desperate to see [his] mother.”

His twin was arrested after being suspected of helping his brother but was later released.
