On Wednesday, Mexican officials said they were investigating a recent narco-banner displayed in Mexico City announcing a powerful drug cartel’s arrival in the nation’s capital, which has long been considered a haven from the drug-related violence ravaging the rest of the country.

The narco-banner containing a message signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was seen by the press on Tuesday hanging from an overpass in one of the city’s main highways. The U.S. considers the cartel as one of Mexico’s most violent gangs.

Several senators pressed officials in Mexico City to take action, according to Reuters.

National Security Commissioner Renato Sales said at a news conference that there hadn’t been indications that the cartel was working in Mexico City and he did not think the banner was from the cartel. He confirmed the presence of one criminal group in the city.

For years, Mexican authorities have long rejected the presence of cartels in Mexico City, despite having made arrests of top drug bosses in the nation’s capital.

Francisco Rivas, the director of the National Citizen Observatory, a civil group that reviews justice and security in Mexico, stated: “We have insisted that it is hard to believe that groups are not operating in Mexico City when the airport is one of the principal points of entry for drugs into the country.”
