A mother in California entered a guilty plea after she was charged with the torture and killing her 8-year-old son because she believed he was gay.

On Thursday, 34-year-old Pearl Sinthia Fernandez accepted a plea deal for first-degree murder in the slaying of her son Gabriel Fernandez in 2013.

The mother also admitted to a special circumstance allegation of murder involving torture, according to the L.A. Times.

Prosecutors claimed that Fernandez frequently beat, starved and tortured the young boy with the purpose of killing him.

The 8-year-old died in May 2013 after he was found unconscious with a fractured skull, broken ribs, missing teeth and BB pellets in his groin.

Deputy District Attorney Jon Hatami alleged that Fernandez of abused the child because she thought that he was gay.

“No human with a heart and soul could do that to an innocent boy,” Hatami said at the hearing on Thursday.

Fernandez is scheduled to be sentenced on June 7th. Under the plea deal, she is expected to be sentenced to life behind bars without parole.
