An investigator in the Mexican state of Coahuila is himself under investigation for his purported role in the drug-related murder of a local drug dealer.

The case is linked to territorial strife between drug cartels.

State Investigator Alejandro Lopez is under an official investigation by his colleagues for his purported participation in the slaying of Adan Rogelio “La Guera Cocona” Melo Cruz.

He was critically injured in early February by a group of cartel assassins who shot him multiple times. After fighting for survival for several days, Melo Cruz passed away from medical complications related to the shooting.

According to Breitbart Texas, Melo Cruz was involved in the trafficking and distribution of narcotics in his home. Lopez was charging Melo Cruz a protection fee and allegedly saw the victim just hours before the incident.

The execution follows an increase of violence felt throughout the city beginning late last year.

Recently, a Los Zetas faction known as the Cartel Del Noreste posted several banners in Piedras Negras claiming responsibility for recent murders and announced their dominance in the area.
