An American citizen believed to be responsible for the slaying of a Japanese woman has been taken into custody in Japan.

Authorities said that 26-year-old Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar is being questioned after the severed head of an unidentified woman was discovered inside his rental at Osaka’s Higashinari Ward on February 24th.

The man, who was originally from New York, and the 27-year-old woman were last seen together on surveillance footage at the JR Morinomiya Station in Osaka around midnight on February 16th, only hours before she disappeared.

Authorities say only her head was recovered in a suitcase. Bayraktar was seen going into and leaving the apartment several times on February 16 with the luggage, Fox News reported.

A search had been carried out after authorities received a tip about Bayraktar restraining the woman in the apartment.

He was detained on February 22th on suspicion of locking up the victim.

The two allegedly met on a “social networking site” before they made plans to take a trip, and the woman told one of her friends beforehand.
