Alabama doctor dies after he was allegedly beaten during Mexico vacation

An Alabama doctor died from injuries sustained in a brutal attack that occurred while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

CBS 42 reported that William O’Byrne, an anesthesiologist specializing in critical care at the University of Alabama Hospital was discovered in a ditch last week by authorities after he was reported missing in the Mexican resort city, CBS42 reported.

Friends managed to locate O’Byrne hooked to a ventilator at a local hospital following a frantic search. He was subsequently flown on life support to UAB where he later died from his injuries.

O’Byrne was vacationing in Mexico last week with friends when he separated from the group.

Friends said O’Byrne had been severely beaten and left for dead in a ditch.

The Department of State hasn’t confirmed whether U.S. officials were investigating the attack.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City told AL.com that they are aware of the incident and were gathering more information pertaining to the case.

O’Byrne also taught at UAB school of medicine.

“Shock. Disbelief. It was hard to sort of comprehend that something like this could happen to someone I know so it was pretty devastating,” said Jason Hall, who has know O’Byrne for seven years.

“He always exemplified the best humanistic characters of a physician and I think trying to emulate that as much as possible is what I would like to do to honor his memory,” said Hall.

But in the meantime, he wants answers.

“Hopefully the appropriate authorities will be able to work with Mexican government and other appropriate jurisdictions to figure out what happened,” said Hall.
