Former NFL All-Pro Aldon Smith surrenders to police following domestic incident

Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith surrendered to authorities fleeing the scene of an incident Saturday in which a woman accused him of committing domestic violence.

The troubled former NFL All-Pro surrendered to San Francisco Police Tuesday. He was subsequently charged with assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and, vandalism (less than $400 in damages), according to ESPN.

However, Smith was not present when police arrived at the scene and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

“The victim suffered nonlife-threatening injuries,” authorities said in a statement, the Mercury News reported. “The suspect fled the scene and was identified as professional football player Aldon Smith.”

The 28-year-old had remained on Oakland’s reserve/suspended list. Smith was suspended a year after a hit-and-run and has not been reinstated to the team since.

Smith, a 2011 first round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, was considered among the most dominant pass-rushing linebackers in the NFL and was named first-team ALL-Pro in 2012 registering 19.5 sacks.

However, a lengthy past of run-ins with law enforcement has since derailed a promising NFL career.

The Oakland Raiders released Aldon Smith on Tuesday after his latest .

In 2012, Smith was charged with three felony counts — later dropped to misdemeanors — of illegal possession of a weapon for an incident in which he was stabbed at a party in San Jose.

He was taken into custody in 2012 and 2013 on suspicion of DUI, and arrested again in 2014 for failing to cooperate with a TSA agent, who alleged that Smith had claimed he had a bomb.
