A woman in Baltimore has been sentenced to 30 years behind bars after authorities discovered her heroin-addicted infant son beaten and starved to death at only nine days old.

Lsat year, a judge convicted 37-year-old Anne Kirsch of manslaughter and child abuse. Kirsch confessed to using heroin during her pregnancy and on October 19, 2015 — the night before Matthew, her son, was killed.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the child was likely born addicted to heroin and suffered severe pains from withdrawal. She gave birth in the repair bay of an auto shop where she was employed.

An autopsy indicated that the boy sustained a traumatic brain injury consistent with having his head slammed against a surface. Medical examiners also determined that his stomach was empty. Prosecutors allege that he had not been fed much in his short life. The examiners revealed that the boy was died due to abuse and neglect.

Kirsch’s husband, Matthew Kirsch Sr., 39, entered a guilty plea to child abuse leading to death. He was sentenced last year to 15 years behind bars with an additional ten years if he violates the terms of his release.

Anne Kirsch was also hit with an additional 45 years if she violates terms of her release.

“My heart breaks that this child suffered through nine days of heroin withdrawals, blunt force trauma, and starvation,” Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced in a statement. “Both parents had an obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of the life they chose to bring into the world.”
