Gunmen kill Mexican migrant during botched robbery near Texas Border

A group of gunmen in Mexico murdered a migrant from the border city of Nuevo Laredo who was attempting to get to Texas across the Rio Grande. The slaying took place after a failed robbery and possible abduction attempt.

The murder occurred on the banks of the Rio Grande in a rural region in the state of Coahuila. The case came to light in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, where the victim was brought to a hospital for medical assistance.

The victim was identified 40-year-old Alberto Rodriguez Galván. At the time of his murder, Galvan was with his cousin, Rodolfo Galván Rubio, who alleged the killing occurred after his cousin trying to fight against an armed robbery by a group of gunmen, Breitbart Texas reeported

The witness told police they had left Nuevo Laredo for Coahuila since they had intended to cross the Rio Grande through an isolated area in that state. He said that they had made an arrangement to have a human smuggler cross them for a fee.

The men were scheduled to meet with the smugglers at an area off the highway that joins Nuevo Laredo and Piedras Negras, Coahuila. When the men arrived, they reached the riverbank and met with five others who were waiting to be crossed into Texas.

The group attempted to sleep during the day since the smuggler would cross them at night. However, the guide never showed up.

The next day, migrants were ambushed by a group of gunmen who arrived in two SUVs. At gunpoint, the men robbed the migrants and stole their ID’s. It is not clear if the crew was also trying to kidnap them, but Rodriguez Galvan tried to fight the men and ran away. One of the gunmen shot and him from behind as he attempted to flee.

After the incident, the gunmen left the area leaving the migrants behind and giving Galvan’s cousin a chance to get help.

Red Cross paramedics raced to the area and took him to Nuevo Laredo because it was the closest town with medical facilities. Despite their efforts, Galvan succumbed to his injuries. Tamaulipas law enforcement officials reported to the hospital to document the murder.
