A 21-year-old Las Vegas woman is facing a potential murder charge after her boyfriend was shot and killed during a conflict with a passing driver that he and the woman purportedly robbed.

Law enforcement officials said 19-year-old Gustavo Carcamo and his girlfriend Brina Gomez carried out the robbery on Thursday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. That’s when Carcamo was killed by a single gunshot to his chest.

Authorities said the firearm, which belonged to Carcamo, “went off” during a struggle between him and a man behind the wheel of a van.

Gomez was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count each of robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiring to commit robbery.

Detectives who are investigating the incident indicated in her arrest report that they “believe the charge of murder should be considered for Gomez, as Carcamo was killed during the commission of a robbery, which both Gomez and Carcamo were taking part in,” the Review-Journal stated.

Authorities in Las Vegas initially believed that Gustavo Carcamo was shot and killed during a targeted attack, but they now allege that he died while robbing a passerby with his girlfriend.

The driver was taken into custody just after the shooting in the parking lot of a local gas station, authorities said Thursday. Booking logs and court documents indicated that he had not been charged.

The driver told detectives that Carcamo opened his passenger door and Gomez stole his wallet, in the center console, containing close to $1,400 in cash.

Gomez denied stealing money from the driver, but officers discovered $1,391 in cash as they were placing her in their patrol vehicle.
