Suspect killed following an officer-involved shooting in Largo, Florida

Authorities say a routine traffic stop quickly erupted into a “violent, explosive situation” resulting in the fatal officer-involved shooting of a suspect Friday night in Largo, Florida.

Officials say Largo police Officer Matthew Steiner stopped a black Nissan shortly before 6 p.m.,

According to Fox 13 Tampa Bay, the suspect pinned the officer between against the gas pumps with his vehicle.

Steiner managed to pull out his service weapon and fire off multiple rounds, hitting the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Paramedics rushed the unidentified suspect to Largo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, doctors at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater treated Steiner for non-life threatening injuries.

“I just spoke with him, and he’s doing OK,” Largo Police Lt. Randall Chaney said later at a news conference.

Chaney added that Steiner’s actions may have prevented others from being injured or killed.

“At the time, the officer felt he was in peril for his own life and took action.”
