Baby in viral video was smoking marijuana with mother

North Carolina Police arrested a mother who was seen helping her 1-year-old daughter smoke marijuana in a viral video that resulted in millions of online views.

Police were alerted on Wednesday after two videos of the girl smoking weed led to outrage on social media. One of the recordings showed the hand of an adult not shown screen holding the cigarillo to the child’s lips. The baby made a cooing noise, inhales, and then let out a puff of smoke before the child shifted toward the adult with an expressionless gaze.

The newly issued warrant said the mother caused harm by having the child smoke marijuana from a blunt more than once over a two-month span beginning in December, according to ABC6.

The girl has been placed in the custody of child protective services.

The mother, Brianna Ashanti Lofton, 20, was booked into custody on charges of child abuse, possession of marijuana, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

During a short court appearance on Thursday, a Wake County judge set Lofton’s bond at $100,000 and required her to have no contact with her child.

A prosecutor had requested a higher bond, adding that Lofton recently faced unrelated charges including marijuana possession and simple assault.

Public defender Caroline Elliot contended that those charges were misdemeanors.

“This is the first … kind of this charge that she has ever looked at,” Elliot said to the judge, referring to the felony child abuse charge.

Elliot added that her client lives with her mother and grandmother and is working on her getting her high school equivalency diploma.

Authorities published a thank-you on Facebook to members of the public who informed them of the video.

While authorities said multiple Facebook users informed them to the video, an account holder whose post was seen by millions said he shared the video hoping the woman would be held accountable. He posted a message asking for her arrest.

The user, who was identified as Rasheed Martin of Rochester, New York, said he doesn’t know the mother and found out about the video when a friend posted it online. He said that once other users showed him the mother’s social media account, and also posted screenshots of that, as well, “so everyone could know exactly who … did that to the poor little girl.”
