Police charge Brittany Velasquez with the killing of her two small children

The mother of an infant and a toddler was taken into custody in Superior, Arizona on first-degree murder charges after the kids were discovered dead in car seats inside a vehicle and authorities recovered evidence of foul play.

Autopsies were being carried out to ascertain the causes of death of the 2-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office did not reveal what evidence had been recovered, AZ Central reports.

The mother has been identified as 20-year-old Brittany Velasquez. She was booked into custody and authorities was not aware of whether she had an attorney who could comment on the charges, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Navideh Forghani. The names of the children have not been released.

The bodies were discovered Monday night outside the family’s residence in the mining town of Superior, a community of about 2,900 residents located roughly 60 miles east of Phoenix.

Some family members of the children were inside the home when police arrived at the crime scene on Monday, but Forghani indicated that she could not indicate the circumstances of how the children were placed or left in the vehicle or a motive in their deaths.

Forghani refused to disclose the evidence that was discovered, but the sheriff’s office announced in a statement that it “indicated foul play.”
