Federal officials plan to prosecute the drug and firearms charges that rapper Juelz Santana is facing after the discovery of a loaded gun in a bag at Newark Liberty International Airport earlier this month.

Juelz Santana had faced state and federal charges following the incident. However, this week, the state charges were dropped, as Essex County prosecutors deferred the case to the feds, according to the New York Daily News.

The 36-year-old performer had entered a not guilty plea to state charges. He remains in custody pending further hearings.

Authorities indicated that security personnel discovered a loaded .38-caliber firearm and oxycodone pills that the rapper didn’t have a prescription for in a carry-on with his ID at Terminal C on March 9th.

They added that he fled the area in a taxi, leaving two bags behind. He turned himself into police three days later.

The New York City native resides in Totowa, New Jersey. His real name is LaRon James.

Santana is well-known as a part of the rap group The Diplomats. He also appeared in season 7 of the reality show Love and Hip-Hop.

It’s not the first time he has had a run-in with the law: in 2011 Santana was taken into custody at his recording studio in New Jersey after he was busted with 17 bags marijuana, two loaded handguns, and ammunition.
