Florida authorities say a prison inmate at the Santa Rosa County Jail died after swallowing cocaine during his arrest.

According to The Pensacola News Journal, the man died at a hospital early Tuesday morning shortly after being transported from the jail.

A sheriff’s office news release says the unidentified man was arrested Monday night during a traffic stop for driving with a suspended driver’s license and possession of a controlled substance

Officials said a deputy witnessed the man ingesting something in his mouth during the traffic stop.

The suspect was taken to the detention center’s medical facility where he was monitored after he told officers he had swallowed 7 grams (0.25 ounces) of cocaine.

Santa Rosa County Jail officials have withheld the prison inmate’s name pending next of kin notification.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the inmate’s death.
