Mexican authorities have taken three reporters into custody, along with the close family member of a politician, and two gunmen in connection with the January slaying of local columnist Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez, who was known for his intense criticism of public officials.

Local reports indicated that the homicide is likely linked to his work and it is believed that the murder was politically motivated.

In a joint statement, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office and the Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office announced the apprehension of six individuals linked to the murder of Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez.

The columnist was attacked in the streets of Nuevo Laredo and was fatally stabbed in front of his daughter and grandchildren. Soon after, the local media in Nuevo Laredo went silent, and no protests took place in the city as has been the standard in other Mexican areas when a journalist is killed.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive but don’t believe organized played a role because Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez didn’t write about the topic.

However, while the majority of his work dealt with investigating reports, which were critical of local politicians in Nuevo Laredo, his final columns did criticize the surge of violence engulfing Mexico.

However, authorities said that so far, evidence has led investigators to suspect the murder was tied to a political feud, not organized crime,-related, KSAT reported..

Officials said two men identified only as “David” and “Adrian” are the main suspects who allegedly committed the murder.

The other suspect identified only as, Gabriel, Luis Ignacio, Juan Jesus, and Rodolfo “El Rorro” Cantu Garcia is alleged to have orchestrated the killing.

“El Rorro,” who is the close family member of former Nuevo Laredo Mayor Carlos Canturosas, is one of the six men apprehended.

Mexican officials have not indicated if Cantu and Caturosas have any ties to organized crime in Nuevo Laredo, a city dominated by a faction of Los Zetas cartel known as Cartel Del Noreste.
