Cartel violence in the Mexican tourist hotspot of Cancun continues with 98 murders recorded in the first three months of 2018.

With the new surge of killings and attacks that took place over Easter weekend, Cancun concluded the first three months of the year with ten additional executions, according to El Dario de Yucatan.

The violence engulfing the once peaceful beach resort area also expanded to Playa del Carmen to a lesser extent, which also recorded three killings this past weekend.

According to local media outlets, five victims were killed, and two others were shot on Good Friday in Cancun.

Law enforcement officials reported the discovery of remains dumped on the sides of roads at two locations in addition to the horrific finding of three bags containing the bodies of two murder victims. Later in the day, two brothers were discovered dead after officers responded to reports of a shooting.

Two other victims were shot in another incident but are expected to survive. Good Friday closed with two more victims injured by gunfire at two separate places in Benito Juarez.

Additionally, a cab driver was reportedly shot on Saturday while outside of his residence. A 19-year-old bricklayer was murdered in his neighborhood. The slayings continued on Easter Sunday when a dead man was found in the Villas Otoch neighborhood with multiple gunshot injuries.

Playa del Carmen recorded ten murders so far this year, one of which took place on Easter morning.

The ongoing turmoil in Mexico is due to the cartel wars over the disputed lucrative drug territories between CJNG, Los Zetas, Gulf, and independent cells loyal to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The total number of murders in Cancun in 2017 was 259 while 165 were recorded in 2016.

Playa del Carmen reported 26 murders in 2016 and 49 last year.

According to previous reports, a grenade attack against state officials took place in Cancun in January. Last month, cartel gunmen ambushed a hospital near the tourist hotel zone and slaughtered a Gulf Cartel plaza boss.
