7 dead, 17 wounded in South Carolina prison riot

A prison riot in South Carolina resulted in the deaths of seven inmates and another 17 injured.

Prison officials in South Carolina indicated numerous fights erupted around 7 p.m. Sunday night in three maximum security housing units at Lee Correctional Institution near Bishopville, South Carolina.

The disturbances lasted until nearly 3 a.m. No guards were hurt in the incident.

The penitentiary has been the scene of several incidents of violence in recent history.

According to ABC News, several adjacent counties provided law enforcement assistance to Lee County after the “mass casualty incident” broke out Sunday evening.

State officials also responded to the call for help.

Prison spokesperson Jeff Taillon revealed that no prison officers were injured during the incident. The 17 wounded prisoners required medical attention outside of the facility.

In February, one inmate was murdered by another prisoner inside the facility.

In 2015, correctional staff members were the recipients of violence after an inmate stabbed two officers.

Last year, four prisoners were killed by two others at the Kirkland Correctional Institution.
