An undercover federal ATF agent was shot and critically injured while working on a joint mission with Chicago police task force officers on the city’s South Side, early Friday.

Chicago police said the shooting happened around 3:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the agent was rushed to Stroger Hospital where he was in critical condition.

No one is in custody.

Luz Campos, who lives several houses down from the shooting, was in her kitchen tending to a toddler when she heard someone say: “Open the door. Open the door.”

After that, she heard what at the time she thought were fireworks.

“Then the cops were coming,” she said.

Other residents of the neighborhood reported hearing a barrage of gunshots. One woman said they were too numerous to count.

Another woman, who was asleep on a couch in her front room, said she awoke to continued gunfire.

“We just heard a lot of shots,” she said.
