Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) pulled over a Mexican citizen who reportedly tried to smuggle close to $600,000 in cash into Mexico across the Arizona border.

According to a CBP press release, officers carrying out inspections found bundles of cash hidden in a spare tire of a Chevy trying to enter Mexico at the Port of San Luis. A Mexican native was driving the truck as he tried to cross the border without declaring the money.

In sum, the CBP officers seized $559,000 in undeclared U.S. currency.

The CBP officers arrested the 37-year-old on April 19th and transferred him to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The man could face a myriad of federal charges related the cash smuggling.

At nearly the same time, CBP officers working the inbound side of the Port of San Luis apprehended an Arizona resident after they uncovered his purported attempt to smuggle drugs into the U.S.

A K-9 officer signaled the possible presence of drugs as the 23-year-old man drove through the port of entry from Mexico. Inspection agents referred the man to a secondary station where they discovered 70 pounds of meth concealed in the vehicle’s quarter panels. Officials estimated the drugs to be worth roughly $211,000.

Officers seized the vehicle and drugs and apprehended the driver. HSI special agents will investigate the attempted drug smuggling and work with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona to file charges.
