Cartel hitmen ambushed local politicians in the Mexican state of Chihuahua last weekend, resulting in the deaths of eight people, the state attorney general’s office reveal.

Both towns are northwest of the state capital in an area undergoing violent cartel activity.

The gunmen arrived in the community of Ignacio Zaragoza at roughly 5 am and began igniting fires to houses, vehicles, and businesses–targeting those that supported local political leaders. A total of six structures were destroyed.

According to local reports, gunmen managed to force their way into the residence of a PRD candidate for city council, Liliana Garcia, and abducted her.

Upon the arrival of state and federal authorities, they recovered three deceased victims in a house that had been set on fire. Responding officials later found a murdered Garcia in a stream on the outskirts of town. She was reportedly tortured and shot multiple times.

In the second assault, a large crew of gunmen ambushed the municipality of Gómez Farías and also ignited homes, vehicles, and businesses while opening fire. Upon the arrival of security elements, the gunmen already left. Investigators recovered another four murder victims.

The two attacks later led to a deployment of federal police and Mexican Army members to the area for search and security contingencies.

A spokesperson for the Partido de la Revolución Democrática or PRD Party verified on Twitter the death of candidate Liliana García and also recognized that the homes and businesses of two other party members were targeted, but the occupants escaped without injury.

In another incident, the head and founder of the Partido Encuentro Social (PES), Eduardo Aragón Caraveo, was discovered Sunday inside the trunk of a car on a road that connects to Ciudad Aldama. Aragón Caraveo was reported missing on May 4th and was killed by gunshot wounds.
