In a landmark decision, the United States Supreme Court struck down a ban on sports gambling.

The high court voted 7-2 Monday in favor of the state of New Jersey, which had filed a lawsuit arguing for the legalization of sports betting.

The ruling means sports gambling will be legal in New Jersey with more states across the U.S. likely to follow.

Prior to the court’s decision, Nevada was the only state with legalized sports gambling.

The 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act had prohibited gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports with some exceptions, like Nevada. The Supreme Court ruling now gives states the go-ahead to legalize sports betting if they want.

“Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own. Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution,” the ruling said.
