Mexican officials saved a mayoral candidate from a rural municipality in Michoacan after she was recently kidnapped.

The victim is the wife of a former mayor of the town of Morelia. That man is currently behind bars for his role in the slaying and incineration of 10 local students.

According to local reports, a group of gunmen abducted Maria De Lourdes “Lulu” Torres Diaz in downtown Alvaro Obregon and succeeded in evading police despite a string of initial searches. Only one day after the kidnapping, Michoacan Governor Silvano Aureoles Conejo went on Twitter and announced that his state’s anti-kidnapping team had saved the candidate.

According to the state’s governor, the gunmen battled with authorities in a firefight where officers killed one of the kidnappers during the rescue mission. The politician said that the investigation is ongoing.

De Lourdes is the mayoral candidate for the town of Alvaro Obregon for the leftist party MORENA and the Worker’s Party (Partido del Trabajo) for the forthcoming elections set to take place in July.

While a motive of the abduction has not been revealed, De Lourdes is the wife of Juan Carlos Arreygue Nuñez, the former mayor of Alvaro Obregon. He has been incarcerated since July for his role in the kidnapping, murder, and incineration of 10 students.

Breitbart Texas reported that Arreygue Nuñez owns a ranch called “Santa Fe” that, in 2008, was used by cartels to hold a summit where a truce of sorts was unsuccessfully discussed. The summit tried to end the out of control violence throughout Mexico that continues to this day.
