An off-duty Texas law enforcement officer fatally shot his brother, also an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, whom the officer initially thought broke into his residence on Friday.

Investigators later verified that there was no burglary at the home in Stagecoach, which is located outside Houston, and said it was not clear what resulted in the shooting death of the Harris County sheriff’s deputy, Fox News reported.

“The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation,” Lieutenant Scott Spencer of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. “We don’t believe there was a burglary.”

Authorities later identified the victim as 57-year-old Rocky Lee, a 26-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office indicated that the off-duty officer reported the shooting just before 5:30 p.m. Police arrived and discovered the body of the victim, a white male in his 50s, on the floor of the bathroom with gunshot wounds.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Tweeted that the shooting took place in Stagecoach, a town roughly 33 miles northwest of Houston, and asked for prayers for the deputy’s loved ones.

“Our hearts are broken,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated. “We’re going to be hurting for a long time.”

The cop who carried out the shooting was a 35-year law enforcement veteran, and spend the past two years with the Stagecoach Police Department.

Police haven’t announced the identity of the officer who fired the shots. Charges have not yet been filed.
