A seemingly innocent elder woman who was entering the U.S. through Texas from Mexico with nothing to declare was arrested for heroin smuggling after agents discovered close to 17 pounds of dope in her car.

Last week, a 2008 Ford Escape being operated by a 75-year-old U.S. citizen entered the port from Mexico and was referred to a secondary inspection.

CBP agents using a non-intrusive x-ray inspection system detected suspicious bundles in the center console. Additional packages were discovered in her purse.

The contents of the seven packages, which weighed 16.75 poundstested positive for heroin.

CBP officers arrested the woman and turned her over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Security Investigations to face charges associated with the heroin smuggling attempt.

“This is not the first time we have stopped a senior smuggler, and it won’t be the last,” Donna Sifford, the CBP port director at the Marcelino Serna port of entry, stated in a press release. “Smugglers will try anything and this case is another example of why CBP must remain vigilant.”
