Soldier charged with stealing armored personnel carrier from Virginia National Guard base

Authorities say a soldier was arrested for stealing an armored personnel carrier from a Virginia National Guard base before leading police on a 60-plus mile pursuit.

State Police Sgt. Keeli Hill tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch the suspect stole the armored vehicle Tuesday night from Fort Pickett in Nottoway County.

The soldier eventually was taken into custody after abandoning the vehicle in Richmond

Authorities have not identified the driver or haven’t revealed how he managed steal the vehicle from the facility.

Hill says he had driven it mostly on interstate highways at speeds that topped around 45 mph (70 kph). State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the vehicle is not a tank.

Police say charges are pending.

No injuries or accidents were reported in the chase.
