The entire police department of a town in Mexico has been arrested after suspicions arose surrounding the murder of a mayoral candidate.

Police in Ocampo, which is located west of Mexico City, were interviewed by state officials after the killing of Fernando Ángeles Juárez, from the left-leaning PRD.

Angeles was discovered dead at one of his properties after an assault by an unidentified hitman on Thursday, making him the third politician to be slain in the state of Michoacán in one week.

Press outlets in Mexico indicated that Ocampo’s close to 30 officers were arrested by the state, and were questioned about their potential involvement with the murder.

According to El Universal, the officers were detained after a previous state effort to investigate them concluded with a public security director being “chased in a hail of bullets.”

Some local authorities are allegedly involved in corruption that Mexico has grappled with as it tries to combat powerful drug cartels fed by demand in the U.S.

Janine Madeline Otalora Malissis, a national election official, indicated that after the Angeles killing that “criminal hands are acting in a premeditated and despicable way to decide, by violence, who should and should not be on the ballot.”

With the elections that are taking place on July 1st, Mexico has also been swayed by political violence, with 18 candidates murdered in different parts of the country.
