Drug cartel hitmen murdered two Mexican mayoral candidates in under 24 hours in the state of Michoacan in Mexico, making the current electoral season one of the most violent in history.

In the last 10 months leading up the upcoming elections, Mexico experienced the killings of over 130 political candidates.

The most recent slaying occurred in Ocampo, Michoacan when three gunmen in tactical clothing ambushed the residence of Fernando Angeles Juarez and executed him.

Authorities have not revealed information about a motive. However, in under a week, three political candidates were slain in Michoacan.

Gómez Lucatero was killed last week in Aguililla, Michoacán.

The killing of Angeles Juarez occurred a few hours after a group of gunmen fatally shot Omar Gomez Lucatero, an independent candidate running for the mayor of Aguililla during a campaign rally, Animal Politico reported.

The current mayor of Aguililla, Israel Mendoza Mendoza, is in exile in Morelia after he was the target of numerous threats.

Soon after Gomez was killed, his nephew posted a video blaming the attack on criminals working for another candidate named Osvaldo Maldonado.

The nephew alleged that one day before the murder, gunmen approached Gomez and told him to leave the race or they would execute him.

Maldonado released a statement maintaining that he had nothing to do with the murder.

Last week, cartel hitmen shot and killed Alejandro Chavez Zavala, the mayor of Taretan, Michoacan, as he traveled to a political event to promote his re-election.
