Cartel operatives and Mexican soldiers battled throughout the streets of the border city of Nuevo Laredo for over 24 hours straight in a string of firefights, spreading panic among residents.

The violence erupted in the early morning after Mexican military forces executed a string of raids targeting leading figures of the Cartel Del Noreste faction of the Los Zetas.

Gunmen quickly opened fire, eliciting a series of violent battles in Nueva Era, Voluntad y Trabajo, and La Fe neighborhoods.

Citizen journalists taped the various shootouts and posted them on social media to illustrate the out-of-control violence expanding through the region’s border areas.

That afternoon, the violence spread to several other areas in the city with one of the bloodiest battles occurring outside the Plaza Las Americas shopping mall where customers were forced to run for cover.

Unlike other cities where Tamaulipas state authorities are spearheading the fight against cartels, in Nuevo Laredo, the Mexican Army and Navy lead the fight against the CDN.

The violence in Nuevo Laredo started over the weekend when a crew of cartel gunmen fatally shot a local prison warden. The slaying occurred outside of an elementary school.

Humberto Vega Avalos was driving his department-issued vehicle when a group of cartel members attacked and fired over 120 bullets at him.

Vega’s truck was struck more than 30 times, while the victim’s body showed close to a dozen wounds, according to reports.

Although a motive has not been ascertained, the murder is likely associated with the recent transfer of inmates out of the city.
