Mexican cartel operatives reportedly crashed a drone equipped with grenades into the residence of the Secretary of Public Safety of Baja California.

The official was on his way to meet with U.S. consular authorities when the attack took place.

The incident occurred in Tecate, Baja California when the Secretary of Public Security Gerardo Manuel Sosa Olachea left to meet with Sue Saarniola, Tijuana’s U.S. Consul General.

While on his way to the meeting, Sosa’s security detail was informed about a drone hovering over his home, according to El Semanario Zeta.

The drone armed with grenades failed to explode after crashing into the official’s home

Baja California authorities and military personnel seized the drone, which had a video system and two fragmentation grenades fastened to it.

The state government revealed in a statement that Sosa does not reside in the residence in Tecate; since he assumed office.

In the statement, officials said that authorities would increase efforts in combatting organized crime.

In an interview with the local press, Sosa ruled out any direct threats since he was appointed last year, although he believes the attack is linked to organized crime groups lashing out after the recent seizures and raids on narco-laboratories in the area.

Authorities did not indicate if any arrests were made after the drone incident.
