Footage captures arrest of Texas capital murder suspect Jose Gilberto Rodriguez

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas concluded a day-long pursuit with the apprehension of a capital murder suspect who reportedly went on a violent crime spree that resulted in the deaths of three people.

The suspect is a parolee who was recently freed from prison.

Harris County deputies executed a well-publicized manhunt that resulted in the arrest of Jose Gilberto Rodriguez on Tuesday morning.

Rodriguez, who is an American citizen, allegedly went on a week-long crime spree that resulted in the deaths of two women and one man.

He also reportedly robbed and shot a Houston METROLift bus driver. The driver is expected to survive.

An ABC13 cameraman filmed the moment that authorities caught up with Rodriguez.

KPRC NBC2 photographer Cesar Martinez was recording video outside the location in northwest Harris County where the home invasion occurred. Martinez saw a man who seemed similar to Rodriguez driving by in a Nissan.

“This Nissan comes rolling up and this guy looks at me and I’m like, ‘He looks like the guy,’” Martinez said. “So I started shooting (video of) he and the police started chasing him.”

Sheriff’s Office deputies took off after the man who pulled over and then drove away again. The chase ended in a collision shortly after, and he surrendered to officers without a fight.

Authorities said they believe that Rodriguez was surveying the area where his parents resided in search of another victim. Deputies allegedly discovered a firearm inside the Nissan.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales started sending out requests to the public on Monday asking for assistance with tracking down Rodriguez.

The crime spree started with a home invasion on July 9th. He then went on to murder a 62-year-old woman in Cypress, Texas, last week.

Over the weekend, Rodriguez robbed two mattress shops in Houston. During those incidents, he killed a man at a Mattress One store on the north side of the city and a female worker at a Mattress Firm store near Willowbrook Mall on the northwest side.

The crime spree proceeded on Monday as Rodriguez robbed and opened fire on a Houston METROLift bus driver. That driver is expected to survive his wounds.

Jose Gilberto Rodriguez has a long criminal history, according to the Harris County District Clerk Chris Daniel.

His crimes include Attempted Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Burglary, Auto Theft, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, and Criminal Trespassing of a Habitation.

He is expected to be charged with capital murder, armed robbery, and home invasion.

His victims include Pamela Johnson, 62, Mattress One employee Edward Magana, and Mattress Firm employee Allie Barrow, 28. Authorities told KPRC that all three victims were murdered in a similar manner.
